Novel technologies (e.g., 5G communication), more stringent regulations (different EMC standards) and various health risks related to electromagnetic fields require calibration of electromagnetic field probes over a substantial amplitude and frequency range (e.g., 50/60 Hz for field measurements under the electrical grid or up to 40 GHz for different EMC testing). To provide complete coverage calibration services require many different field generating set-ups, and these are currently not available in all European countries.

Therefore, the aim of WP3 is to develop new or to improve existing traceable measurement and calibration capabilities related to electric and magnetic field intensity quantities (frequency response, linearity, isotropy) generated using different set-ups / field generators covering low-frequency fields, fields caused by different communication regimes or the requirements of electromagnetic compatibility testing (EMC) in the frequency range up to at least 18 GHz. This work package will include all metrological aspects; from building new set-ups, uncertainty calculations, verification studies for reducing measurement differences between different field realisations, as well as an intercomparison which is required to support new CMCs.

Task 3.1 will develop or improve capability for electromagnetic field calibration in the frequency range from 10 Hz up to 40 GHz, including the generation of electromagnetic fields.

Task 3.2 will improve capability for the measurement of electromagnetic field intensity, including reducing the causes of deviations between calibration results obtained from different realisations or different laboratories

Task 3.3 will use the results and developments from Task 3.1 and Task 3.2 to (i) validate the new capabilities for electromagnetic field generation and calibration and to provide less experienced NMIs/DIs with evidence to support new CMCs, (ii) to produce a best practice guide on how to build calibration capability for electric and magnetic field in a full frequency range (i.e., 10 Hz – 40 GHz), and (iii) to prepare training material for a practical training and knowledge transfer session.
